Why “Your Czech”?

Everybody’s got a different reason for learning Czech. Sometimes people feel that there is a single “Czech” out there that they have to force into their heads. This outside knowledge, like a block of stone, that you have to fit in. A bit like an enemy that you have to conquer. But language is a code for communication –⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠ it is a tool. Like a hammer or a pen or a computer. It is there to help you do what you need to do. A hammer helps you pound a nail into the wall. Czech helps you to order a coffee or buy a ticket or tell a joke to your friends.

And people want to do different things. Some need to pass a test in Czech to get a residence permit or citizenship. Some want to better communicate with their friends and family. Some want to read Czech books in the original. Some want to feel more at ease when they are on holiday in the Czech Republic. Some need Czech at work, to speak with customers in a restaurant, for example. Some sing Czech opera and need to work on pronunciation.

Over the years we have had students who had these precise needs (and others) and therefore they each needed a different Czech. There is not “one” Czech. There are as many Czechs as there are speakers of the language. Let us help you get closer to the Czech you need. Let us help you acquire “your Czech”.

    “Stanka taught me how to teach at the very beginning of my teaching career (2018) and it was, without exaggeration, the best thing that could have happened to me. At that time, I had already taken a few courses (both at university and outside of it), but none of them actually taught me how to apply all that theory directly to the lesson.
    It was Stanka who gave me absolutely specific instructions on how to structure the entire lesson, so that it would flow nicely, how to organize exercises, so that the student would remember as much as possible during the lesson, how to elegantly assign tasks without an intermediary language and how not to stress the students unnecessarily, but at the same not to spare them challenges :-).
    Since then, I have taught many diverse Czech courses for people of all kinds of education, needs and mother tongues and I am currently teaching Finnish in Finland as part of integration courses and also at the university. I supplement and sharpen my pedagogical education at every opportunity, and the list of workshops and conferences I have attended during my career would probably take several pages, but even after all that, I regularly return to Stanka’s notes because they are simply the absolute foundation of a good and effective lesson!
